Freyberg Wins Regional Mathex Competition

Competing against around 20 other teams from around the region, Freyberg’s perfect score in the first round set up a comfortable first place in the annual Math competition.

Freyberg’s quartet of top Year 9 Mathematics students managed to win comfortably with a rare outright lead of three points. Gaining the lead from the very first round, the group made up of Tina Sherlock, Alice Olynsma (standing) Zac Lochhead, and Brian Grady (seated), maintained composure and their lead throughout the competition.

The Mathex competition was started in 1990, and involves questions like how many keys and holes exist in a 500 piece jigsaw puzzle under intense time pressure.

Robert Elder, Head of Mathematics at Freyberg was pleased to have Freyberg’s name on the trophy again, and was proud of the team for doing well especially in the practical sections which are difficult to prepare for.
