Ordinary life for extraordinary students from The Flat

Rushing off to catch a bus; spending the morning in town, visiting a cafe and keeping within a budget when purchasing morning tea; working out at the gym, swimming and walking to keep fit; collecting recycled paper from classrooms around the school; completing the daily “flat” jobs e.g. vacuuming/washing/dusting; planting trees in the Pit Park, and pingao grown from seed out at the beach are just some of the everyday community activities the transition “flatters” participate in each year while they are in The Transition Flat.

The “Flat” at Freyberg has been operating for over 3 years and was set up for ORSS funded students with special needs, aged 18-21 years old to assist them to make the transition from school into the community by teaching them independent learning skills.

Each “flatter” also has a work experience placement. Weighing produce at TOOPS, packing bird seed at Tui Products, walking dogs at The SPCA or working in a school library are just a few of the varied work experience placements the flatters participate in each year.

Each term students plan a flat trip – The most recent trip was to Turoa skifield on Mt Ruapehu this year where some of us learnt to ski or snowboard.
