Hard Working Football Girls - 12th Best in Country
In
the top high school soccer tournament where only one other Manawatu / Wanganui
school qualified, Freyberg’s Girls First XI worked hard to finish a
well-deserved 12th place this week in Nelson.
Qualifying for the tournament by winning a satellite tournament in Napier,
as well as the minor premiership regionally, Freyberg’s first XI competed
amongst 32 other teams in the Lotto Sportswear premier division tournament.
The girls qualified top of their group after three games. Unfortunately the
group stage also saw Goalie Keeper Chrystal Brosnan injured by an illegal
and offside opposition sliding tackler. Outfield player and Year 10 Mikayla
Boxall took her place in goal, and performed exceptionally well in an
unfamiliar position especially when making two crucial saves in their fifth
game penalty shootout win.
Coach James Reynolds was proud of the “huge effort from the girls, who
played extremely well.” He was most impressed with their determination as
the “played their best football when they were behind at half time.” He also
wanted to thank Manager Yvonne Black for putting things together behind the
scenes.
The girls organised a variety of fundraising efforts to go to Freyberg’s
first ever premier division soccer tournament. There were hours spent
cleaning, baking muffins running raffles, quiz nights, and washing cars all
for the trip to Nelson.
Vice Captain Kim Nottingham (pictured with the ball) was voted the team’s
Most Valuable Player by their seven opposition teams. Excited about next
year’s tournament, she noted that “there were only two Year 13s in our team,
so we will be unstoppable next year.”
