350 New students for Freyberg
Two hundred and fifty new Year 9 students start at Freyberg this week for
the first time, pushing the school roll out to 1420. The year 9 is still the
smallest year however, as Freyberg continues to be a popular school for
older students to transfer to. Around a hundred older students have transferred
from other high schools, with a further three classes full expected to
transfer to Freyberg throughout the year. The teaching staff has also grown,
with 108 teachers now attending each day.

At the powhiri ceremony to welcome the new students and teachers, Principal Peter Brooks described the journey over the next five years that these year 9s would take. He introduced senior leaders, and pointed out some of the leadership and academic goals year 9 students might have for the future. He also congratulated the Year 13 year group for gaining Freyberg's best ever Merit and Excellence NCEA passrate in 2011.
