Athletics Finals Information

Athletics Finals are on Friday 1st March at the Massey Track, Massey University.

There will be free buses running from Vautier carpark from 7.30am to 8.45am.

The same buses will return at the end of the day to Vautier carpark. Students on the North Street or Ashhurst buses will be taken to the event in the morning but must choose the correct bus at the end of the day. There will be no roll taken for buses, so students will be able to choose to use the buses or not. We expect students to have that conversation with their whānau so that you are aware of how they will be getting to and from the event.

If students are driving or being driven to Massey Track, there is parking by Massey turf. The car park at the bottom of the track is reserved for staff who are setting up and packing down the event, so will not be available for students or whānau.

Massey University has asked that students do not walk through their buildings on and around the campus. The event will end at around 2pm.

Whānau and spectators are invited to attend the event but are asked to stay on the bank behind the high-jump area or strictly on the pathway around the track so that we are able to keep the student area a safe space. Massey Track is also a smoke-free and vape-free venue.

Students need to bring plenty of water, food, wear sunscreen, bring a hat and warm / rain proof clothing if it is cold or wet. Massey Track is an all-weather track but if the event is cancelled, then school will run as a Friday Week B timetable. This decision will be made by 7.30am on Friday.

All students competing must wear shoes and shirts. Students will not be allowed to compete in track events without shoes. Students can’t wear face or body paint and no full-face masks (normal face masks and costumes that do not cover the full face are allowed). No balls to be brought as there is no safe space for them to be played with.

There will be a free lunch served and there is also a water fountain available. Students should also bring some food for morning tea as no food will be sold during the day. Sunscreen will be available, and students are encouraged to apply sunscreen at the start of the day and again at lunchtime. There is a covered structure on the bank that will also offer weather protection and hats (both wide brimmed and caps) are also encouraged.

Students will need to meet their HOS or Dean in their house area between 8.45am and 9.30am for a roll check. All finalists should have a program and map from their Kaiārahi before the event but a program is also attached to this email.

If students are in the following events they will need to be on the first bus leaving at 7.30am or at Massey track well in advance of the 9am start:

All age groups for 200 Metres

Intermediate Boys Discus

Intermediate Girls Shot Put

Senior Girls Javelin

Senior Boys High Jump

Junior Girls Long Jump

Junior Boys Triple Jump

If students have a running event on at the same time as a field event, they should check into to field event then go to the track and compete in the running event before returning to their field event. Track events take priority over field events as they cannot be held up.

Staff will be onsite during the day to support, encourage and monitor behaviour of students. All students are expected to behave in a manner that reflects the expectations of our school. Any issues will be followed up promptly by the pastoral team. Even if students are not competing, they will be able to support their peers or they can approach the Sports Room before Friday and offer their help in one of the events.

If your child is unwell or absent, please contact Philippa Dravitski – Attendance Officer either by email (dravitskip@freyberg.ac.nz ) or phone 06 358 4971 ext. 709.

Students that do well at finals may be asked to compete at MISSA the following Friday 8th March 2024. These students will be notified as soon as possible.

Thank you for your support with our Athletics Finals. Keep an eye on our Instagram and Facebook pages for photos and live results on the day.
