Homestay

Freyberg High School places a great importance on the welfare and care of all international students. It is a condition of enrolment that all international students live in homestay accommodation provided or approved by the school.

Homestay families provide excellent care for students, and each family is carefully selected and matched with each student. We have two experienced homestay managers, who are dedicated to placing and monitoring students in homestay families. All homestays have been vetted by the Police and are visited on a regular basis by the homestay managers to ensure their continuing suitability. All students receive the highest level of homestay and pastoral support possible while studying at Freyberg High School.

In a homestay, students are provided with:

  • A private bedroom which includes a bed, a desk or table, desk lamp, chair, heater, wardrobe and adequate storage for clothes and personal items.

  • Bed linen and towels

  • Three meals a day. The midday meal on Monday to Friday is a packed lunch which may be prepared by the student or host.

Become a Homestay Host

Thank you for your interest in hosting an International Student from Freyberg High School. Hosting a student is a great way for you and your family to enjoy learning about a new culture and sharing your own.

These young students benefit immeasurably from a caring and supportive environment, and being able to improve their spoken English in a relaxed, family-oriented situation, such as after school and over dinner.

Ideally your home should be relatively close to to the school. However, if you live further afield, you can still host a student. Some students enjoy having the option of living in a more rural setting which is very different from their home environment. The hosting payment is paid every fortnight, retrospectively.

Please note that it is mandatory in New Zealand for all Homestay hosts and family members over 18 years of age to undergo police vetting.

If you are interested in becoming a homestay host, please contact one of our homestay managers: 06 358 4971 ext 781 (During school hours)
